Really yummy chocolate cake that’s great fun to make.

  • 225g butter
  • 225g caster sugar
  • 4 eggs
  • 225g self-raising flour
  • 3 tbsp milk
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract or orange extract
  • 2 tbsp cocoa powder

1Heat oven to 180C. Grease a 20cm cake tin and line the bottom with a circle of greaseproof paper.
2Whisk the butter and sugar together. I usually soften the butter with a burst in the microwave on low to make it easier.
3Add the eggs, one at a time, mixing well after each one.
4Fold through the flour, milk and vanilla or orange extract until the mixture is nice and smooth.
5Divide the mixture between 2 bowls. Stir the cocoa powder into the mixture in one of the bowls.
6Take 2 spoons and use them to dollop the chocolate and vanilla cake mixes into the tin alternately.
7Give the tin a few taps on the worktop to get rid of any air bubble.
8Take a skewer (or carving fork if you don’t have a skewer) and swirl the mixture for the marble effect.
9Pop in the middle of the oven for 45-55 mins (if you stick a knife in it should come out clean).
10Turn onto a wire rack to cool.
11If you can handle more chocolate, cover with chocolate ganache.
